On individuality, stochasticity and buffering

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

One of the most exciting fields opened in the last years is the new understanding of the existence of something that we could call as “biological heterogeneity”. This new field of study is focused in observing and understanding the differences between reactions of a same kind, between cells of a same kind, and ultimately, between [...]... Read more »

Global Biodiversity Indicators at-a-glance

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

I really wanted to talk about this article before. A few weeks ago, it was published in Science a work by an extensive work by a high number of researchers, focused in the review and discussion of indicators of global indicators of biodiversity. Citing the article, in 2002 world leaders committed, through the Convention on [...]... Read more »

The Red Queen hypothesis in a glass

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

What factors predominate in evolution? In daily life, the constant evolution of our lives is influenced by our conditions and by external factors. If I want to build a house with my own hands, I have to consider my abilities, some of which are genetic (I am small, thin and I am not strong, so [...]... Read more »

Milk, Prions and Evolution

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

Prion protein (PrP) is the focus of some neurodegenerative diseases. It is believed that misfolded prion protein (PrPsc, or “scrapie”) is the infectious agent responsible for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD), among others. PrPsc propagates by conversion of normal (healthy) prion protein (PrPc).
Several questions arise in the research community. Two of [...]... Read more »

Science predicted the Chile’s Earthquake

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

I am finally back, repairing some of the damages in our labs. The situation in Chile is not good. The deaths are raising slowly, but continoulsy, over 800 people now. Also, some data regarding thousands of missing people is also of great concern.
Regarding to science, several laboratories have reported serious damages, including lost of data, [...]... Read more »

The ring of life

by Pablo Astudillo in astu's science blog

I was really surprised, due to my lack of knowledge in too many areas of life sciences, that our history, the history of all species, from bacterias to humans, it is not like a tree. Usually we think about evolution as a tree, where some species have developed and give rise to a new, improved [...]... Read more »
