I hold a PhD in Health Sciences and have been working in the field of clinical microbiology for almost 10 years. My research deals with the diagnosis, epidemiology, clinical significance, genetic diversity, and taxonomy of common intestinal 'amoebae' with special emphasis on Blastocystis. Since 2006, I have published about 60 scientific, peer-reviewed papers, of which 25 or so are Blastocystis-specific papers. I'm based at the Department of Microbiology and Infection Control, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark and did my post doc at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. F1000 Associate Faculty Member (since 09 December 2009). ORCID # 0000-0002-1417-7048 Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Blastocystis-Parasite-Blog/161212370703270

This Month in Blastocystis Research (DEC 2015)

by Christen Rune Stensvold in Blastocystis Parasite Blog

Practically all Blastocystis research has focussed on identifying a role for the parasite in disease. Meanwhile, no one has really tried to looked into what Blastocystis may tell us about human health. Together with partner labs, our lab has produced data suggesting that Blastocystis carriage is extremely common, and probably also extremely long lasting. We have also shown that the parasite is associated with certain gut microbial communities and that it is more common in healthy individuals tha........ Read more »

Dientamoeba: To encyst or Not to Encyst?

by Christen Rune Stensvold in Christen Rune Stensvold

Review on Sarcocystis

by Christen Rune Stensvold in Blastocystis Parasite Blog

Despite the fact that humans can serve as both intermediate and final hosts of Sarcocystis, and despite the fact that muscular sarcocystosis can cause severe disease, still very little is know about most epidemiological and clinical aspects of the parasite. We have tried to come up with some ideas that could potentially advance our understanding of the epidemiological aspects of Sarcocystis and sarcocystosis.... Read more »
